Strengthening Teen Optimism
Middle Schools and High Schools have become pressure cookers for academic
performance, with parents and kids feeling the stress. In fact, researchers
estimate that one in five high school students will have a major depressive
episode.
As Christine Duvivier has shown, three Myths of Education™ keep us from
capitalizing on the true strengths our children possess and can lead
to depression.
There is good news, however. Christine Duvivier studied students in
the bottom 80% of their classes and her surprising conclusion shows
that these teens have precisely the strengths and gifts needed to flourish
in life—as world-changing leaders and scientists—and as prosperous
citizens.
Many of us have traditionally been taught how to identify learning disabilities,
motivation issues, and problems that run in families. Now, positive
psychologists are looking at the other side of the coin—and helping
people tap into inherent strengths in order to flourish. In addition,
optimism is
correlated with higher performance and an Optimistic Explanatory Style
is a powerful tool for buffering against anxiety and depression.
In response to parent requests, Christine will lead a workshop on Thursday,
December 6, from 7- 9 p.m.
In this high impact workshop, you will learn to:
(1) Identify your child’s and your own inherent strengths
(2) Help your teen use strengths to increase happiness
(3) Trace family strengths to extend well-being
(4) Use an Optimistic Explanatory Style with your adolescent
$100/person. To register, or for more information, please contact Julie

About the workshop leader:
Christine Duvivier has a master’s degree in Positive Psychology from
the University of Pennsylvania. For more than 10 years, she has taught
executive education, worked with teens in scouting, and coached youth
basketball. Most recently has been asked to speak with groups of parents
and educators about her research on the strengths and gifts of teens
who are not top students.
Her work uncovers exciting opportunities—and damaging myths—in the approach
to educating children, both high and low performers. It encourages parents
and educators to question our models and understand how to guide students
to fulfilling, productive lives. While at Penn, she was also certified
to teach the Penn Resiliency Program and was selected to work with school
administrators and teachers in Geelong, Australia as they incorporate
positive psychology and resilience in order to increase student well-being.
